Rise and Shine-get there by 6 or 7 to join the bright-eyed folk strolling leisurely and buying their week’s supplies as dawn breaks.

Saturday Market, on the site of an 18th century slave market and flanked by some of St. Thomas’ most elegant buildings, counters its somber setting with a jovial spirit that you will never find in the aisles of a supermarket. Mixing goods and vendors from the fields, orchards and seas of St. Thomas, St. John, St. Croix, and Dominica, Market Square is a real inter-island experience.

You can find home-bred, home-raised St. Thomian pork ribs and organic chicken, just-caught fish:old wife, mackerel, barjacks, sand shark anyone?.. big tables of fruit , herbs and vegetables from several islands along with cloves, anise, cinnamon bark scrolls, and nuts. Avocados are sold with guarantees of what day they will be ripe- just off the Friday boat from Dominica. For your own gardening there are plants and saplings for sale: how about a snow in the mountains plant or a Buddha Belly plant?. Also, honey, eggs, homemade soups and fruit and herb drinks abound.
